Installation of two layers of liners are now underway at Cagayan de Oro City’s new engineered Sanitary Landfill located in Sitio Burakan, Barangay Pagalungan.
As posted in Facebook by City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office (CLENRO) head Edwin I. Dael (see below), workers are seen rolling up the liners at the site. The liner is usually a low permeability synthetic membrane designed to control or hinder the flow of leachate into underlying aquifers which can cause water quality degradation. The initial layer is usually composed of compacted clay.
As per announcement from city officials, the new sanitary landfill will be opened on Tuesday, April 18, a day after the permanent closure of the old city dumpsite located in Upper Carmen.
Pagalungan is one of the city’s hinterland barangays and located some 16 kilometers southeast of the city proper. It is accessible via Brgy. Lumbia.
