Yesterday, March 16, residents in Cagayan de Oro were surprised of the presence of fighter jets zooming in the sunny skies. Actually, the new fighter jets are the Philippine Air Force’s (PAF) brand-new FA-50 “Golden Eagle” jet fighters which conducted their Mindanao leg of their overflight missions yesterday morning.

According to a report from Business Mirror, the overflights covered the airspace of Cagayan de Oro, Butuan and Surigao cities at around 10:00AM. This is the first time the jets flew over Mindanao. The FA-50 jets were the latest delivery of the 12-plane order from Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI). Six more FA-50 jets will be delivered soon. It has a top speed of Mach 1.5 and is capable of being fitted with air-to-air missiles, including the AIM-9 “Sidewinder” air-to-air and heat-seeking missiles, aside from light automatic cannons.

The conduct of the over-flight/familiarization flight missions aims to further demonstrate its present air power capability to the public, as well as, show the general public that these new air assets are vital in strengthening the country’s territorial borders, and that the PAF has already re-entered the supersonic era. The familiarization flight will also serve as a great avenue to train the pilots and allow them to be acquainted with the various aspects in flight missions such as the country’s different terrains, weather, and possible areas of interest. Since the jets arrived in the country, they have been very useful in providing air support missions to our ground troops.
