Khaki was the color of the day last Monday, March 13 as Cagayan de Oro commemorated the 75th anniversary of General Douglas MacArthur’s breakout.
Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Oscar Moreno led the opening ceremonies held at the MacArthur Marker in Macabalan with special guests which included former mayor Constantino Jaraula, and representatives of Norfolk Sister City Association, General Douglas MacArthur Foundation and the Veterans Federation of the Philippines.
The highlight was the re-enactment of MacArthur’s historical landing in Cagayan de Oro and the convoy to Diclum in Manolo Fortich where MacArthur boarded a plane enroute to Australia. Journalist Mike Banos took on the role of the general.
The event was organized by the Cagayan de Oro Historical and Cultural Commission (HisCom) which aims to honor the “Liberator of the Philippines” and pay tribute to those who offered their lives so the future generation can reap the fruits of freedom and democracy.
