Cagayan de Oro City Councilor George Goking is reviving the planned skyway along CM Recto Avenue in the near term as he sees the traffic woes once SM’s second mall opens in a few months.
It can be recalled that the proposed Licoan-Lapasan Skyway Project was included in the Medium-Term Regional Development Plan (2004-2010) for Northern Mindanao. See screenshot below. Somehow, the project did not get the needed approval from the National Government back then due to its large cost.
Because of the non-implementation of the project and the worsening traffic condition in the area, a flyover at Licoan was built instead.
Based on a report from SunStar CDO, Councilor Goking sees some sort of improvement of traffic along CM Recto but is still urging the City’s Roads and Traffic Administration (RTA) to be prepared once the new mall opens in May. Accordingly, SM executives are closely coordinating with city officials for the opening week which is expected to draw the crowds and convergence of motor vehicles in the area.
