The traffic in Cagayan de Oro is not just on land but also on water. Just recently, the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) increased the authorized number of harbor pilots at Cagayan de Oro (Macabalan) Port to eight to cope with the increasing number of sea vessels calling at ports within the jurisdiction of Port Management Office (PMO) Misamis Oriental/Cagayan de Oro.

Port statistics showed that in 2016, there were 16,292 shipcalls at the said PMO, up from 15,379 in 2015. The move is also in anticipation of infrastructure and economic developments in the area.
