The Bureau of Customs (BOC) last Thursday, February 16, busted an alleged attempt to smuggle into the country some 8,000 kilograms (kg) or 320 drums of hydrochloric (HCL) acid from India at the Mindanao Container Terminal (MCT) in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental.
In a press release, Customs Commissioner Nicanor E. Faeldon said that the 320 drums of HCL were contained in four 20-footer container vans and consigned to Juchem Enterprises with address at Purok 13 Pulido Street, Barangay Doongan, Butuan City.
Faeldon also disclosed that the shipment was the subject of an alert order by customs intelligence. Upon its seizure, the shipment was found to have no import permits and clearances to import controlled substances in violation of Dangerous Drugs Board Regulations, provisions of Republic Act (RA) 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. The shipment arrived at MICT last January 31, 2017.
HCL is one of 13 toxic ingredients commonly used in creating crystal meth or more known locally as shabu.
