A record eight (8) players who were either born or have played in Cagayan de Oro City in their early years are currently in the active roster of the Philippine Basketball Association’s 42nd season.

Leading the cast is NLEX Road Warriors 6’0 guard Carlo Lastimosa. Born in Cagayan de Oro, Lastimosa played high school ball at Xavier University High School before going to Manila to play for College of St. Benilde in the NCAA. He was drafted 20th overall by Barako Bull during the 2013 PBA Draft. He became a starter for and scorer for Blackwater Elite before being traded to NLEX this season. He joins his uncle Jojo Lastimosa who’s an assistant coach at NLEX.

Former Gilas Cadet Glenn Khobuntin is also with NLEX. The 6’3 Khobuntin played for National University in the UAAP before being drafted 10th by NLEX in the 2015 PBA Draft.

Veteran guard-forward Aaron Aban is now with Globalport Batang Pier. The 6’3 Aban graduated high school at Liceo de Cagayan University before playing for Letran in the NCAA. He was drafted seventh overall by the Alaska Aces in the 2006 PBA draft. Aban played six years with Talk ‘N Text before signing up with Globalport this season.

Jiovani Jalalon is a rookie playing for the Star Hotshots. He attended the Sacred Heart of Jesus Montessori School in Cagayan de Oro City before going to Manila playing college ball with Informatics. He transferred to Arellano University where he blossomed as a player and eventually being part of the Gilas Cadets.

Guard Philip Paniamogan plays for the Mahindra Floodbusters. Despite a colorful collegiate career at Jose Rizal University, the 6’0 Paniamogan went undrafted in the 2014 PBA draft. However, his solid showing in a pre-season tournament earned him a spot at Globalport’s roster last year.

John Paul Erram and Philip Paredes are two players who were born outside Cagayan de Oro but have played in the city before.

The 6’8 Erram was born in Makati City before attended high school at Pilgrim Christian College. He first played for Xavier University in his early collegiate career before being recruited to play for Ateneo de Manila University in the UAAP. He was drafted 15th overall in 2013 by the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters. He now plays for Blackwater Elite.

The Malaybalay City-born 6’5 Philip Paredes, was a star player of Sacred Heart of Jesus Montessiori High School in before going to Manila to play for Reedley International School. He was then recruited by De La Salle University. He was drafted by Barako Bull Energy in the 2014 PBA Draft. He plays for Globalport Batang Pier.

And finally, 6’3 Riego “Bambam” Gamalinda of Blackwater Elite was born in Iligan City but played briefly with ACSAT Cagayan de Oro before being recruited to play for San Beda in the NCAA.
