The river taxi service in Cagayan de Oro City operated by the Safer River, Life Saver Foundation Inc. (SRLSFI) has resumed its operations after years of being used for river monitoring. Launched last November 14, 2016, the river boats provide an alternative to the riding public. With the river taxis back in operation, commuters can hurdle major traffic-prone intersections in the city and arrive at their respective destinations less the hassle of dust, heat, and noise. Taking the river taxi allows you to have a breath of fresh air and a rare view of the city’s riverbanks. Read old post HERE. The river taxis temporarily halted their operations after the Sendong tragedy and since then have been used solely for environmental monitoring. Now, SRLSFI has brought back the river boats as an advocacy for river protection and eco-tourism.

Two river boats are currently being used: M/B Golden Girl and M/B River Muse. M/B Golden Girl is the larger of the two with a capacity of 33, while M/B River Muse has a capacity of 18. As required by regulating agencies, all passengers are oriented with safety and emergency procedures and provided with life jackets during the trip. The river taxis have two personnel on board: the captain and a crew.

Main ports along the river are Liceo Port, Macabalan (back of Brgy. Hall), Puntod (near San Roque Chapel), Consolacion (near Marcos Bridge), and Macanhan (dike). Other pick up points are: Golden Heritage, Carmen-Petron, Duaw Park and Paseo del Rio. These other ports already have access to the river (stairs along the river dike) but shallow portions prevent the river boats from going near the river bank. Construction of access facilities are currently being planned. The proponent is still finalizing the schedule in relation to the availability of the ports mentioned. See the map below.

With its main port at Liceo de Cagayan University, it’s a given the students of the said university are the immediate beneficiaries. In fact, they have released the November schedule below as guide for its students. Boat fare is P12 (Macabalan/Puntod-Liceo). Shorter distances like Consolacion-Liceo will be P6. Tickets are also issued to passengers. By the way, non-Liceo passengers can still disembark at Liceo Port and then walk along the river dike towards Petron-Carmen.

Further, the river taxis are also available for special trips for river cruises especially during weekends. In fact, there are already bookings this December. For inquiries, you may dial (088) 858-7786 or (088) 858 4093 local 219 or send email to srlsfi@gmail.com
