RANDOM SHOTS: President Duterte visits Camp Evangelista


President Rodrigo Roa Duterte visited and talked to the troops of the 4th Infantry “Diamond” Division of Philippine Army at Camp Evangelista in Cagayan de Oro City yesterday, August 9, 2016. More than 400 soldiers and civilian personnel as well as media and local officials were on hand to witness the President’s first visit to the camp since his oath-taking.

Among his itinerary was the awarding of Gold Cross Medals to nine Officers and Enlisted Personnel of the 1st Special Forces Battalion, Special Forces (Airborne), Special Forces Command, Philippine Army under the operational control of the 403rd Infantry Brigade of the 4th Infantry Division. The nine showed gallantry in action in an encounter last August 5, 2016 against more or less 80 heavily armed members of the New People’s Army in Sitio Kambangon, Bgry. Lilingayon, an outskirt community in Valencia City, Bukidnon. The nine are as follows:

  3. 2Lt Jehiel P. Liw-agan (Inf) PA

  6. Cpl Raelcum T. Mendador (Inf) PA
  7. Cpl Brendo C. Espiritu (Inf) PA
  8. PFC Jaynard E. Llander (Inf) PA
  9. PFC Ricky Jay P. Borja (Inf) PA

Meanwhile, President Duterte also awarded two Enlisted Personnel of the same unit with the Wounded Personnel Medal after sustaining gunshot wounds during the second encounter on August 6, 2016 in the same area with the same NPA group. They are:

  2. PFC Richelle V. Sandigas (Inf) PA

President Duterte also visited the wake of PFC Ricardo Simbajon who was killed in the said encounter last August 5, 2016.

In his “Talk to the Troops”, President Duterte reiterated that the government wants peace but will not allow abuse from the NPA. He also said the government is trying to reach out to the MNLF and MILF to address the Moro problem in Mindanao.


He also lambasted the NPA on the use of landmines.


On the issue of drugs, President Duterte pointed out that when he reads the drug watch list, it was in consonance with his duty as President to let the Filipinos know who are those involved in the illegal drugs.


President Duterte also chided Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno on the issue of arrest warrants.
