In 2009, a lot of constituents were elated when the decades-old Don Gregorio Pelaez Sports Complex in Cagayan de Oro City underwent a major improvement after the Provincial Government of Misamis Oriental back then installed a rubberized track oval, providing a consistent running surface not only for track athletes but also to regular joggers. It was also the first rubberized track oval in the province.
But a few of years after, the rubberized track oval started to deteriorate, and in 2013, the new provincial government made it a least priority in their projects further aggravating the sad state of the oval. However, early last year, hopes of having a world-class sports facility were rekindled after a proposed Redevelopment of Don Gregorio Pelaez Sports Complex Project came out revealing a much modern sports facility with a parkng building, commercial, mall and hotel component. View it HERE.
Further, it was learned that the proposed Redevelopment Project will be implemented thru the Public Private Partnership (PPP). Read it HERE.
Since then, we have yet to gather any updates as more joggers begin to lament the sad state of the once grand sports facility in the city. Still, everyone is hopeful for its eventual redevelopment.
