The long-delayed Mindanao Railway System (MRS) Project continues to gather dust as the National Government continues to delay its implementation.
As shown below, the whole project costs P78 billion covering approximately 2,000 kilometers of railways connecting Mindanao’s major cities. Implementation will be done in six (6) phases with Phase 1 covering the Iligan-Gingoog link.
While Luzon and Metro Manila continue to receive big ticket projects thru the Public-Private Partnership Program, the MRS which was conceptualized during the term of President Fidel V. Ramos still has not seen the light of day. In fact, our latest update was in June 2015 where another proposed feasibility study will be conducted. (Read LINK). Further, the MRS wasn’t even included in the list of infrastructure projects under the PPP.
The MRS is now being revived by presidential candidate and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte, who’s a Mindanaoan, and vice presidential contender Senator Alan Peter Cayetano which will be their priority if elected and was discussed in the latter’s recent visit to Cagayan de Oro City.
