The first presidential debate will take place in Cagayan de Oro City on February 21, 2016.
It was announced recently in a local radio news program. The decision was made by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) after Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte formally filed his certificates of candidacy (COC) for the highest position of the land. Davao and Cagayan de Oro were being considered for the Mindanao leg of the debate but the latter was eventually chosen as a neutral ground. The specific venue will be announced soon.
Since this is sanctioned by Comelec and barring any disqualifications, the main contenders led by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, Sec. Mar Roxas, Sen. Grace Poe, Vice President Jojo Binay and Sen. Miriam Santiago are expected to lock horns on various issues such as agriculture development, poverty reduction and asset creation and redistribution, charter change and peace and order. As earlier disclosed by Comelec, a dual-moderator format will be implemented for the Mindanao leg. The second presidential debate (Visayas leg) will be on March 20, 2016 while the last presidential debate (Luzon leg) will be on April 24, 2016. Accordingly, GMA Network and the Philippine Daily Inquirer will sponsor the first debate presidential. Read LINK.
