St. Augustine of Hippo, is the patron saint of Cagayan de Oro City. Every 28th of August, the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro City celebrates the Feast of its patron.
St. Augustine Cathedral located right across city hall is the seat of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro. The original church was built by Augustinian missionaries in 1845 but was destroyed in 1945 during World War II. Only the wooden cross in front of the church was left (photo below) and survived up to this day (Read HERE). This Friday August 28, the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro also celebrates its 82nd anniversary.
After the war, American missionary Fr. James Hayes S.J., who later became the city’s archbishop rebuilt the church inspired by Gothic architecture.
Inside the Cathedral at its apse is the statue of Saint Augustine shown below.
