Cagayan de Oro City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office (CLENRO) head Edwin Dael expressed elation after Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Director Rex Monsanto of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) recently revealed a significant reduction in total suspended solids (TSS) at Iponan River from 300 parts per million (ppm) to just 8 ppm.
This development resulted in the gradual clarification of Iponan River which has long been turbid due to incessant illegal mining in the mountains. Dael said this is the fruit of their efforts in pursuit of illegal miners in the mountains where many hydraulic water pumps were confiscated and illegal miners arrested. Dael added the efforts were led by members of the Task Force Kinaiyahan and supported by the City Engineering Office and City Social Welfare and Development Office as directed by Mayor Oscar Moreno. With this positive result, CLENRO is even more motivated to continue their operations to protect the countryside and the environment and provide alternative livelihood through support to other departments at City Hall for the residents in the area.
