For several decades, throwing of coins by ship passengers to Sea Gypsies more known as Badjaos have been a common and usual practice especially during docking operations at Cagayan de Oro Port.
This usually happens as a passenger vessel docks at the port and Badjaos in their outriggers called bancas approach the ship and egg on passengers to throw coins. More often, passengers and even crew members throw coins into the sea and watch as Badjaos dive into the water and retrieve the coins at the bottom. See more photos HERE. Watch a video clip below.
However, this practice will now be a thing of the past as the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) in its memo dated February 10, 2015 (see below), will start prohibiting the throwing of coins into the sea. As stated, the move is in line with the International Safety Management (ISM) Code and International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) Code Implementation.
