If you happen to visit Cagayan de Oro’s St. Augustine Cathedral, you will notice a wooden cross standing right at the front of the Church.
Do you know that the said cross was erected in 1888 by the Augustinian Recollect missionaries? The original church which built in 1845 but was destroyed during the American bombardment in 1945. Only the church’s facade and this cross withstood the bombing. See photo from Museo de Oro below. Do you see the wooden cross?
Archbishop James Hayes rebuilt the church after the war now with the gothic architecture as seen today and the bell tower transferred from left to to the right.
The cross is now protected with steel casings.
