Xavier University (XU) in Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines won first place in the “Blue Responsibility Award: Manufacturing for a Sustainable Terra Preta Sanitation System” during the 12th Global Conference on Sustainable Manufacturing (GCSM) International Competition held at the Puteri Pacific Hotel in Johor Bahru, Malaysia last September 24, 2014.

XU’s “Terra Preta Sanitation System for Post Disaster Transitional Communities in the Philippines” bested 25 other entries from 14 other countries. Screenshot of title below.

The GCSM 2014 intended to stimulate the development of new sustainable sanitation systems that enable the reuse of human excreta. The objective of the competition was to design a sanitation system that creates the maximum value from what is today considered as waste.
