A watchtower will soon rise at the famed Agutayan Reef, a marine sanctuary off the coast of Jasaan town in Misamis Oriental.

This after STEAG State Power Inc., the Provincial Government of Misamis Oriental and the Department of Energy recently signed the tripartite memorandum of agreement (MOA) for the implementation of the P6.6 million #Agutayan Reef Protection Project which involves the the construction of a watchtower and conduct of regular sea patrol and marine monitoring in the area.

Photo above shows the MOA signing with (from left): Misamis Oriental Governor Yevgeny “Bambi” Emano, Department of Energy (DOE) Undersecretary Raul Aguilos and STEAG State Power Inc (SPI) President and CEO Dr. Bodo Goerlich.

The project will be funded by Steag’s social development fund contribution to the DOE’s Energy Regulations (ER) 1-94 program. Agutayan is a 5,000 square meter white sandbar that sits on approximately three-hectare marine sanctuary, some 5 kilometers off the coast of Poblacion, Jasaan. The reef serves as home and breeding ground for a wide variety of fish and endangered marine species. Aside from marine protection, the project aligns with the provincial government’s comprehensive eco-tourism development program. (SPI)
