For so many years, Don Apolinar Velez Street is Cagayan de Oro’s main thoroughfare stretching from the National Highway (CM Recto Avenue) towards Fernandez Street (formerly Dolores Street).
The street is basically the city’s main business road with banks, hotels, hospitals, restaurants and other establishments plus the presence of two large educational institutions (City Central School and Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School) and the once largest sports facility in the country, the Don Gregorio Pelaez Sports Complex. The Provincial Capitol Compound which includes Vicente de Lara Park is also along Velez Street.
In the last decade up to now, the street’s building infrastructure has been changing with new buildings rising. As vacant spaces diminish, developers have no other way to build but go vertical. The street will never be the same again.
