Thousands of residents in Cagayan de Oro will need to be relocated if the JICA-funded P5 billion river flood control project will be fully implemented.
As shown above, the whole length of the project covers nearly 12 kilometers from Pelaez Bridge at Taguanao area to the river mouth. The area enclosed by the green line is the river basin. Thus, most structures along the river banks will have to be removed along the 12-kilometer stretch as river dikes will be constructed in its place similar to what is now being constructed beside City Hall and Duaw Park as well as across Carmen.
The project which will be implemented in 2016 will affect residents in Barangay Macasandig, Balulang, Carmen, Kauswagan, Puntod, Macabalan and Bonbon and all poblacion barangays traversed by Burgos Street.
