Xavier University ranked 3rd while Capitol University 4th among universities in Mindanao based on the most number of centers of excellence (COE) and centers of development (COD) awarded by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

Xavier University had no COE but has 7 COD (agriculture, chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, electronics and communications engineering, teacher education, literature). Meanwhile, Capitol University had 1 COE (teacher education) and 2 COD (criminology, information technology)


Mindanao State University- Iligan Institute of Technology topped the list for Mindanao with 4 COEs (biology, chemistry, mathematics, teacher education) and 4 CODs (civil engineering, information technology, physics, Filipino). MSU-IIT also ranked 8th in the country.

Further, the top 4 universities on the island are found in Northern Mindanao with Bukidnon’s Central Mindanao University ranking 2nd with COE (3): agriculture, forestry, veterinary medicine; and COD (2): biology, mathematics.
