The USS George Washington aircraft carrier arrived in the country a few days ago to assist in international aid efforts for survivors of Super Typhoon Haiyan. But do you know that at least one of the American carrier’s more than 5,000 crew is from Cagayan de Oro City?

Well, I just knew this after browsing over USSGW’s facebook page (HERE), Petty Officer Kent Velez was among those listed and from his facebook account (screen capture below) , he was indeed from our city. And it was his birthday yesterday, November 17, 2013 (greeting posted at USSGW’s facebook page). Velez is among the 300 Filipino Americans in USSGW (SOURCE).

The USS George Washington arrived at Leyte Gulf from Hong Kong carrying the MV-22 Osprey aircraft, which can land or takeoff anywhere and instrumental in reaching hard-to-reach typhoon hit areas in Leyte and Samar.
