With a mutual understanding that local economic progress can only be sustained through a relevant and competitive human resource pool, industry and academe leaders from Cagayan de Oro City recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to study the viability of an Industry – Academe (IA) Council in Cagayan de Oro. The MOU was signed during the 3rd Quarter General Meeting of the Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ORO Chamber) held last October 29, 2013 at the Seda Centrio Hotel.
Spearheaded by the Oro Chamber and Philippine Business for Education (PBEd), the Council is intended to provide a regular venue for local stakeholders from industry and academe to collaborate at the highest level. The overall goal is to improve the city’s human resource capabilities by improving the quality and accessibility of higher education.
Specifically, the IA Council’s focus will be on: (1) involving industry and improving access to education and labor market information; (2) improving access and leveling the playing field and ;(3) systems development and improving governance. After committing to study the Council’s viability, the next step will be to invite more companies to institutions be part of the council. The IA Council is intended to be formally launched before the end of the year.
Present at the signing were City Mayor Hon. Oscar Moreno, Oro Chamber President Mr. Efren Uy, Executive Director Ms. Lordelie Enjambre, PBEd Executive Director Ms. Love Basillote, as well as other distinguished members from the city’s many businesses and higher education institutions.
Initially supported by PBEd through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/Philippines funded project called The Higher Education and Productivity Project. This project aims to solve the skills gap and mismatch problem currently being experienced by many of the country’s college graduates mainly through industry – academe partnerships at the national and regional level.
