Several basketball players from Cagayan de Oro City have officially applied for the Annual PBA Draft this year.
They are Far Eastern University’s Ricardo Cawaling, Jr., College of St. Benilde’s Carlo Lastimosa, Ateneo de Manila University’s John Paul Erram, University of the East’s Lucas Tagarda, and University of the Philippines’ Samuel Joseph Marata.
Of the five, the 26-year old 6’4 Cawaling seemed to have the best credentials being once a member of the Smart Gilas National Basketball Team. He last played for the San Miguel Beermen in the ASEAN Basketball League.
The 6’0 Lastimosa is a nephew of former PBA superstar Isabelo “Jojo” Lastimosa and is a proven scorer during his NCAA days with CSB. After his high school days with XUHS, he was recruited to play for Ateneo de Manila but eventually transferred to College of St. Benilde in the NCAA where he was named Rookie of the Year in 2010.
Meanwhile, the 6’7 “Poy” Erram played for the 5-peat UAAP Champion Ateneo and is known for his defense and shot blocking ability and got the needed mentoring from former Ateneo coach Norman Black. He played for high school for Pilgrim Christian College and a stint at Xavier University before being recruited to play for Ateneo.
The 6’2 Marata was a former member of the Philippine U-18 National Team. Although the Marata clan is from Iligan City, his mother hails from Cagayan de Oro. He played high school ball with St. Mary’s School in Macasandig before transferring to Manila. He played briefly with De La Salle University in the UAAP before transferring to UP.
Lastly, the 5’11 Tagarda belongs to the basketball playing Tagarda clan in Cagayan de Oro. He played high school with Colegio de San Juan de Letran.
Which one of them will be lucky to be drafted and play for the country’s premier basketball league?
