Here’s an old Mindanao map attached to a book written by a Jesuit priest published in 1894 and found in a library in Oxford by a Jesuit priest a hundred years or so later (Fr. Albert Alejo aka Paring Bert) — sometime in 1994.

This is an ethno-resource map. It shows who lived where (by tribe) in Mindanao then. Note the reddish portions? These are Mindanao’s gold rich areas. You would observe the northern part of the island is where Cagayan de Oro is located. Based on the map, the city is surrounded by gold-rich areas….and “Oro” means gold in Spanish.
