HISTORY WATCH: Mariano Velez, Jr. – Cagayan de Oro’s 1st Olympian




Did you know that Mariano Velez Jr. was the first athlete from Cagayan de Oro to participate in the Olympics?

Velez was a national amateur welterweight boxing champion and represented the Philippines as a welterweight boxer in the 1948 London World Olympics. He is shown above beside the flag bearer (facing the camera) during the London Olympics.

Velez was also mentioned in an article by renowned sports columnist Quinito Henson HERE. Unfortunately, he lost his first bout to Canada’s Clifford Blackburn. SOURCE
