Xavier University is planning to put up an information technology-driven Disaster Risk Reduction Management Center for Northern Mindanao.
Officials described the plan as a long-term response beyond the university’s Eco Village relocation site for Sendong survivors currently in the development stage. “The provision of a relocation site is not really our competency as we are [geared] more on research,” Fr. Robert C. Yap, SJ, president of the university, said during an event promoting the school’s Engineering Research and Development for Technology program last weekend. “Our response to this frontier is to really develop a [risk reduction management] center in service to the city and to the region,” he said. The system the university wants to develop would necessarily have a “people component” or engaging local communities, he added.
