Sea trials are still underway for the planned Duck Tours of Engr. Elpie Paras.

The 32-seater Lighter, Amphibious Resupply, Cargo, 5 ton (LARC-V) amphibious vehicle found its way into Macajalar Bay from its garage in Gusa. The proposed River Duck Tours includes Cagayan de Oro City landmarks such as St. Augustine Cathedral, Divisoria, MacArthur Marker and Xavier University. Accordingly, they still have to survey the bay to avoid sandbars which have developed at the mouth of the river.

In case you’re wondering why these vehicles are known as “ducks”, the original design by Sparkman & Stephens and General Motors Corporation was named DUKW, which is explained below: (from wiki)

  • “D” indicates a vehicle designed in 1942,
  • “U”meant “utility (amphibious)”,
  • “K” indicated all-wheel drive,
  • “W” indicated two powered rear axles.

Hence, DUKW was pronounced Duck and.
