Did you know that the original English lyrics of the university hymn of the University of the Philippines was written by a Cagayanon student? His name was Teogenes Velez who was then a Liberal Arts student of UP.
Atty. Teogenes Velez graduated from the UP College of Law in 1921 and is a former Representative of Misamis Oriental in the 7th Philippine Legislature (1925-1928). In 1917, Velez won the contest in the school for “a poem that would be capable of touching the heart and soul of every student and alumnus of the University of the Philippines.” Below is an screenshot of a part of the book Nicanor Abelardo: The Man and the Artist, a Biography by Ernesto Epistola, showing Velez’ feat. Abelardo, considered to be one of the Philippines’ greatest musicians, composed the hymn.

The hymn has since been translated into U.P. Naming Mahal shown below. The translation to Filipino was a composite from seven entries in a contest held by the University. The judges did not find any of the seven translations as fully satisfactory.
So if you’re a Cagayanon studying at UP, you must be proud.
