GEORGE and Peter Lines Inc., one of the largest Cebu-based shipping companies, will soon sail the Cebu-Dumaguete-Cagayan de Oro route and vice versa.

The Cagayan de Oro City Council, a recent session, has approved its franchise application to operate the said route.

The City Council has adopted a resolution endorsing the application of George T. Chiongbian III, executive vice president and chief operating officer of George and Peter Lines Inc., to the Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) for the franchise operation of the said route.

According to Chiongbian, the company is requesting for the city’s support to provide an alternative link between Cebu, Dumaguete and Cagayan de Oro once a week.

“The approval of the City Council is one of the requirements of Marina so that our request for franchise would be approved,” Chiongban said.

During the session, the city councilors present unanimously approved the company’s application, citing the bright prospect for the shipping industry and the city’s need to link with different destinations in the country.

Councilor Juan Sia, chairperson of the City Council committee on business, commerce, and cooperative, said with the operation of George and Peter Lines, going to Dumaguete would now be accessible, citing that this route has not been readily available in the past.

George and Peter Lines Inc. has been in the shipping industry for 100 years and uses large ferries with a capacity of between 2,000 to 4,000 passengers plying the more distant routes such as Manila, Davao, Butuan, Zamboanga and Cagayan de Oro.

The company also has medium-sized vessels such as the roll-on/roll-off types plying to nearer destinations and fast ferries that transport passengers to and from neighboring islands in two hours or less, depending on the destination.
