Brother Armin A. Luistro has called on the teachers of the Dept. of Education (DepEd) in region 10 to support the implementation of the Enhanced K+12 Basic Education Program (BEP).
Here for the first time after his appointment was approved by the Commission on Appointments, the Education Secretary was the keynote speaker of the recently concluded Education Summit attended by the teachers from 13 schools division of Northern Mindanao, held at the Pelaez Sports Center, Cagayan de Oro City.
The 2-day activity started with the display of the “One Division, One Product” Booth Exhibits & Book Fair and a Teachers’ Extravaganza that showcased their talents and skills in various fields, such as leadership, personal enhancement, ball games, cheer dancing and sports, among others.
Speaking on the summit theme “Edukasyon sa Pagbabago, Kaunlaran at Kapayapaan ng Inang Bayan (Education for Change, Progress and Peace for the Country),” Luistro said he has high hopes the Enhanced K+12 BEP will put the Philippine Education System at par with international standard.
The program involves one (1) year of kindergarten, six (6) years of elementary education from Grades 1 to 6, four (4) years of high school, from Grades 7 to 10 and two (2) years of senior high school, from Grades 11-12.
Students will be given more time to master competencies and skills, as well, as time for other learning opportunities beyond the classroom and graduates will possess competencies and skills relevant to the job market.
Anchored on human development with socio-economic relevance through an enhanced curriculum, K+12 is expected to provide a high school graduate with adequate knowledge and skills to gain meaningful employment, can already start a business of his own or choose to be self-employed.
“It will also prepare the high school graduate to pursue a higher education and receive quality, internationally recognized and comparable education,” the Education Secretary stressed. (Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob, PIA 10)
