The proposed uprating of Agus 6 Hydroelectric Power (HEP) Plant, Units 1 & 2, to extend its economic life for another 30 years, has been endorsed by the Regional Development Council of region 10 (RDC-X).
To be sourced from the internal cash generation of the National Power Corp. (NPC), at least Php2.633B is needed, inclusive of the project base costs, price contingency and interests during construction, for this run-of-river type of HEP located in barangay Fuentes, Iligan City.
Engr. Leon M. Dacanay, Jr., Regional Director of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), region 10, said the uprating project is one of the priority power development generation projects included in the 2004-2010 Regional Development Plan of Northern Mindanao.
Found to be economically and financially viable, the project aims to increase Agus 6 HEP’s rated capacity by 12.0MW, from 50.0MW to 62.0MW, increase its dependable capacity from 25MW to 35MW and to improve the plant factor to 57 percent.
Dacanay, Vice-Chairperson of RDC-X said the Agus 6 HEP Units 1 & 2 were commissioned in 1953 and 1956, respectively, but have not undergone any major rehabilitation other than the replacement of locally fabricated, spare parts and materials and regular repair and maintenance since their commissioning dates.
Previously approved by NEDA and the Investment Coordination Committee (ICC) in December 2006, implementation of the proposed uprating project had not taken off because of failures in the bidding process.
Since the project had not been implemented within 18 months from its approval by ICC, that year, it has been re-submitted by NPC for ICC review, in accordance with its guidelines and procedures, after which it got the RDC-X endorsement, last year, Dacanay said. (Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob, PIA 10)
