WITH the vaunted “Cagayan de Oro boys” anchoring the team, reigning UAAP (University Athletic Association of the Philippines) champions Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws are seeking to regain the world team chess championships they won in 2007.
The FEU men’s squad, which after bringing home the bacon finished runner-up in 2008 and failed to campaign last year, is optimistic of its chances in the 15th GACC World Inter-Varsity Chess Championships set to be held, Dec. 14-21 at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Cagayan de Oro’s triumvirates of Christian Arroyo and Lennon Hart Salgados (both Corpus Christi graduates) and City High alumnus Antonio Chavez Jr. will play alongside John Ranel Morazo, Sheider Nebato and Kevin Mirano for the FEU’s another ambitious title bid.
“Garbo kaayo kini sa Cagayan de Oro nga majority kanato ang mo-spearhead sa FEU team in the world team championships. And we’re just hoping nga matabangan usab kami niini nga kampanya sa gawas sa atong mga kababayan,” Arroyo, the most experienced player in the team, told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro via e-mail.
FEU’s women’s team, made up of Jedara Docena, Ronna Señora, Jenny Palomo, Lovelyn medina, RY Jose and Angelina Mortos, will also see action in the weeklong meet.
Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales and National Master Alex Milagrosa will be the team coaches.
