The Mindanao Power Grid had an installed capacity of 1,835.48 megawatts, during the second quarter, this year, but it had a dependable capacity of only 1,089.34MW, during the period.
Installed capacity means the number of megawatts that a power plant can produce while dependable capacity is the number of megawatts produced during peak hours, Engr. Leon M. Dacanay, Jr., Regional Director of National Economic and Development Authority, region10, said.
Data gathered by NEDA-10 from the National Power Corporation (Napocor) show that the installed capacity of the various power plants in Northern Mindanao, during the period, was 1,063.70MW.
Dacanay said the region, which supplies 65.61 percent of the total dependable power source in the Mindanao Grid, has a power generation mix of hydro, coal-fired, diesel and solar plants posting up shares of 69 percent, 27.83 percent, 3.03 percent and 0.14 percent, respectively.
However, its dependable capacity was only 714.76MW or 67.10 percent of the installed capacity, during the period, a decline of 115.99MW or 13.98 percent, compared to the same period in 2009 due to El Ni?a that caused the lowering of the water levels in Lake Lanao and Pulangi River that supply water to the HEP’s, respectively.
Meanwhile, data at NEDA-10 also show the following power plants, their location and their installed and dependable capacity, during the period:
Agus 4 HEP, Barangay Nangka, Balo-i, Lanao del Norte, installed capacity, 158.10MW and dependable capacity, 107.33MW and Agus 5 HEP, Barangay Ditucalan, Iligan City, installed capacity, 55MW, dependable capacity, 39.53MW.
Agus 6 HEP, Barangay Maria Cristina, Iligan City, installed capacity, 200MW and dependable capacity, 135.33MW and Agus 7 HEP, Barangay Fuentes, Iligan City, installed capacity, 54MW and dependable capacity, 31MW.
Pulangi 4 HEP, Barangay Kiuntod, Camp 1, Maramag, Bukidnon, installed capacity, 255MW and dependable capacity, 180MW and Mindanao Coal, Barangay Balacanas, Villanueva, Misamis Oriental, installed capacity, 232MW, dependable capacity, 198.60MW.
Diesel Power Plant I (DPP1), Barangay Mapalad, also in Iligan City, installed capacity, 108.60MW, dependable capacity, 21.67MW and the solar plant of the Cagayan de Oro Power and Light Co., (CEPALCO), both installed and dependable capacity of 1MW.
