THE Department of Agriculture through the Ginintuang Masaganang Ani High Value Commercial Crops Program (GMA-HVCC) recently turned over to Jasaan LGU the 1st Packing House of the eleven (11) Packing Houses to be turned over to other municipalities that were lined up this year as service facility for Post Harvest Development Services.
At a glance, a Packing House is a consolidation area for farmers to bring together their crops and their produce. This enables bulk buying of commodities such as fruits, vegetables and root crops at a reasonable price.
The turnover of the Packing House to the Jasaan LGU was held on June 30, 2010 at the Packing House site in Jasaan along the National Highway of Barangay Luz Banzon.
The Packing House occupies an area of Four Hundred Forty-Three (443) square meters lot owned by the Jasaan LGU. This project was proposed by the LGU of Jasaan to the Department of Agriculture with its objective in mind to increase the income of the farming families in the locality who engages in organic vegetable production project.
It also aims to establish a storage facility for vegetables in the area as well as to increase the farmer’s income.
This project will be of advantage to 102 organic vegetable farmers who are devoted to cultivating their organic vegetable production within the 5 identified barangays namely San Nicolas, San Isidro, Natubo, Kimaya and Barangay Corrales all in Jasaan, Misamis Oriental.
The total cost of the Jasaan Packing House is P 1.65 million, thru a cost sharing scheme. The 1 million cost was shouldered by the Department of Agriculture while the P 650,000 is shouldered by the LGU of Jasaan.
The turnover ceremony was attended by Department of Agriculture officials; Engr. Roxana H. Hojas- DA 10 Regional Technical Director and Ms. Chedy V. Ansale- DA 10- HVCC Coordinator and officials of the Municipality Jasaan- Municipal Mayor Redentor S. Jardin and Horacio Q. Factura, Jr.- Jasaan Municipal Agricultural Officer with Fr. Neil Limbaco who lead the blessing of the infrastructure.
Guests, visitors and farmer-beneficiaries also came in the said event to witness the bountiful turnover of the Packing House for their municipality. (Suzy May Roa of DA-10)
