ANOTHER group of Cagayanons are trying their luck in the famous television series Showtime. And they are indeed daring.
“Didto ra siguro mi sa Manila mag-audition. Next week siguro try namo amo best para makaadto mi didto,” said Charlie Vallar, lead dancer of Saint Squad, in an interview after their gig at City Hall’s flag raising two Mondays ago.
According to Vallar, the group was formed September 2007.
Most of the members are still high school students and they come from a mix of campuses – Cagayan de Oro National High School, Bulua National High School, Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School (Mogchs), Liceo de Cagayan University, Cagayan de Oro College (COC) and Mindanao University of Science and Technology (Must).
Portraying themselves as religious, they named themselves as such in homage to Catholic saints. The second half of their name is derived as such because there are 12 in the group – thus a squad.
Enthusiastic dancers all, they got to form themselves after being inspired by the hip hop-themed movie You Got Served.
They look up to the Philippine All Stars, Xtatic and Amplified Crew as their idols but all their hip hop grooves and back flips are original.
Vallar said it’s not easy to be a Saint Squad because they have to juggle between school, making assignments, studying and dance practices.
But it surely is fulfilling, he remarked.
