Sandre Roque, a fresh graduate from Cagayan de Oro City will represent the Philippines and compete in the ultimate test of fuel saving ability and knowledge – the ‘Asia’s Smartest Driver’ – the first Shell Eco-marathon Asia at the Sepang International Circuit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on July 8-9 and to see how far they can drive using just one liter of Shell fuel designed to improve fuel efficiency.
Also going with Roque is Don Eleazer Balboa, a web publisher from Antipolo City. Roque and Balboa bested eight other finalists in Shell’s search for the ‘smartest’ Filipino drivers at a recent fuel-efficiency boot camp. Pilipinas Shell started the competition by soliciting videos where motorists share fuel-saving tips. Videos were uploaded on TopGear.com.ph.
Since May, Shell has been searching the Philippines to find the nation’s Smartest Drivers in a competition that challenged motorists to record a video sharing their fuel-saving tip via topgear.com.ph. Ten finalists were selected from the pool of entries who then went through a fuel efficiency boot camp where they battled it out in a driving challenge to determine who can drive the farthest with a given amount of fuel.
As national winners, Roque and Balboa will also have the chance to win a brand new, fuel-efficient car in Malaysia.
For more than 20 years, Shell has held annual Eco-marathons in Europe and the USA.
For the first time, this year will see the event come to Asia, bringing together more than 90 student teams that will compete to build and design cars to go as far as possible using the least amount of fuel.
Rona Rodriguez-Baes, Fuels brand manager said: “We are calling on everyone to support Sandre and Don as they demonstrate how they can make every drop of fuel count.
Both of them share Shell’s commitment to encourage motorists to save more fuel on the road more often. At the end of the competition in Malaysia, we have high hopes that one of them will be the last driver standing to be hailed as Asia’s Smartest Driver.”
To prepare for the challenge, Roque and Balboa will be guided through a Shell Academy, which will feature intensive theoretical and practical training by a host of fuel efficiency international experts including Fuel Economy Guinness World Record holders, John and Helen Taylor.
The program will allow them to learn more about how to save fuel and inspire other Filipino drivers to do the same.
The Smartest Driver competition at the Shell Eco-marathon Asia follows an identical competition in Europe that was recently won by Gunther Grossler, a driving instructor from Germany who drove 22.75-km using a single liter of Shell fuel formulated to achieve better mileage.
