The Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCARRD) and its regional partner have established four more Farmers Information and Technology Services (FITS) centers in Northern Mindanao, specifically in the provinces of Camiguin and Misamis Oriental.
Under the government’s Tekno Gabay Program, there are now 27 FITS centers operating in the region according to the Northern Mindanao Consortium for Agriculture Resources, Research and Development that implements local projects for PCARRD. Two new centers have been set up in the municipalities of Sagay and Mahinog in Camiguin, adding to the two FITS centers established two years ago in Mambajao, Camiguin, which focus on lanzones farming technology.
Misamis Oriental also opened two new centers, in Medina and in Gingoog City. The Medina center will become a component of the municipality’s extension services.
The FITS centers provide information related to agriculture, forestry and natural resources. A typical center provides a technology clinic, training, advisory and consultancy services, client links with agricultural experts and financial institutions, and technical assistance on enterprise development.
PCARRD operates under the Department of Science and Technology and is actively coordinating with the Department of Agriculture. — Louise G. Dumas
