Reigning Southeast Asian Games champion Marna Pabillore made Cagayan de Oro City proud again by bagging a gold medal in the just concluded 6th Korea Open International Karatedo Championships 2010 held at the Gudeok Gymnasium in Busan, South Korea.
Pabillore, a silver medalist in the 2006 Doha Asian Games, trounced Man Sum of Hong Kong and Thu Nga of Vietnam in the elimination then clobbered Ching of Chinese Taipei in the championship round of the women’s kumite minus 55 kilogram.
The Philippine Karatedo team went home with three gold, two silver and one bronze medals with Noel Espinosa and newcomer Mabel Arevalo also bagging gold medals in their respective events.
Espinosa ruled the men’s kata event. He defeated Hong Kong, Indonesia, South Korea and Vietnam bets in the early round before toppling another Hong Kong fighter in the final match.
Arevalo won in the women’s kata event of the tournament participated by Canada, China, Hong kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Korea, Kenya, Macau, Nepal, Nigeria, Russia, Sri Langka, Taipei, Thailand, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, the United States and the Philippines.
The national team will next compete in some tournaments in Indonesia, Thailand and Serbia as part of their build up for the Asian Games slated later this year in Guangzhou, China.
