A GROUP of media photographers from Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental convened on Saturday at the Cagayan de Oro Press Club (COPC) Boardroom for a re-organizational meeting and election of officers.
During the meeting, the group approved to change its name from Press Photographers Association of Cagayan de Oro (PPA-CdeO) to News Photographers of Northern Mindanao (NPN).
For 2010, the group’s new set of officers include Mike Baños of Kagay-an.com as president; Joey Nacalaban of Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro as vice president; Terry D.C. Betonio also of Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro as secretary/treasurer; Marlon Lapuz of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro Commission of Social Communications and Mass Media as auditor; and Orwin Austria of Gold Star Daily as press relations officer.
Organized in 2007, the NPN is dedicated to the advancement of photojournalism in Northern Mindanao as it intends to uplift the standards of the profession.
Ed Montalvan, the organization’s past president and is currently the publisher of Mindanao Current, said NPN will spearhead trainings and seminars on basic photography tentatively in July.
Montalvan said the training would be in preparation for the photo contest that the group intends to hold in August in time for the city’s fiesta celebration.
“What we really want is to hold seminars and trainings on photography every month and if possible, hold photo contests every month starting with the fiesta in August,” he said during the meeting.
Montalvan said NPN is open to everybody who is involve in news gathering either in print, radio or TV and with a camera – regardless of type and brand – as long as he or she is committed to the promotion and advancement of photojournalism.
