ASEAN Vietnam age-group silver medallist Lennon Hart Salgados and his fellow Palarong Pambansa board one champion Tristan Frech Ibaoc will be in the forefront of the local talents’ quest for national honors in Davao.
The 16-year-old Salgados, now campaigning in the 20-under bracket, and the 10-under bet Ibaoc are hoping to duplicate their feats last year in Kalibo, Aklan when they both hurdled the national age group qualifier.
Davao City, otherwise known as the Durian City of the South, will be this year’s host of the national age-group (May 15-19) and national juniors (May 20-24)–two of the country’s important youth chess events to be slated for the first time in Mindanao.
“Although, we’re running out of time..naningkamot gihapon kita nga makapangayo og suporta sa City Hall aron sab mahatagan og exposure ang uban nato nga kabataan nga nag-ensayo under the city’s Asset-in-chess program,” said CdeO chess trainer Lorenzo “Jun” Cuizon.
Salay pride Richelieu “Jongjong” Salcedo III, himself an accomplished combatant in previous Asean tourneys, will reportedly lead over a dozen woodpushers the provincial government of Misamis Oriental will be sending in Davao.
“Misor will have about 14 players ready to join the Davao chessfests og apil na niana si Salcedo nga usa sa mga reliable talents sa probinsiya,” National Master Levi Mercado told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro yesterday.
Junior standouts Antonio Chavez Jr. and Alfredo Rapanot Jr. of Cagayan de Oro will also be in Davao representing the multi-titled Far Eastern University in the age-group and junior qualifiers along with other FEU varsity players under the mentorship of Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales and assistant coach in National Master Alex Milagrosa.
