A smoking ban will be enforced at the Divisoria Night Café and Night Market in Cagayan de Oro City on Friday, April 9, 2010.
This after City Mayor Constantino “Tinnex” Jaraula issued Executive Order No. 2010CGJ-21 enjoining all residents, government agencies and business establishments to join and support the tobacco-free Divisoria Night Café and Night Market this coming Friday evening.
In his order, Mayor Jaraula hopes that the smoking ban at the Divisoria Café and Night Market will send a powerful global message that Cagayan de Oro City is serious about the pursuit of healthier living for its constituents.
The Divisoria Night Café and Night Market is one event, which is nationally and internationally acknowledged as among Cagayan de Oro’s famous attractions, that will generate the necessary attention and interest if used to showcase the city’s pursuit of healthy living,” Mayor Jaraula stressed.
The tobacco-free Divisoria Night Café and Night Market provides a venue to promote the benefits of healthier, tobacco-free lifestyle and surroundings, the City Chief Executive added.
Cagayan de Oro City is registered as one of 1,000 cities worldwide spearheading a global movement to make cities healthier as part of World Health Organization’s declaration of the year 2010 as the Year of Urban Health.
In view of the smoking ban, sale of cigarettes or any form of tobacco shall not be permitted within the Divisoria Night Café and Night Market on April 9. Concessionaires, customers, participants or spectators will also be prohibited to smoke within the area closed off for the Divisoria Night Café and Night Market for the duration of the tobacco-free night.
To heighten public awareness on urban health living, the City Health Office and the Center for Health Development-Northern Mindanao of the Department of Health will distribute leaflets and brochures, including educational audio-visual or live presentations, during the Night Café and Market on April 9.
The Divisoria Night Café and Night Market Committee with the assistance of the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (COCPO), the Roads and Traffic Administration (RTA) and the Mayor’s Action Squad for Assistance (MASA) are expected to ensure the enforcement of the smoking ban.
In a related development, City Hall officials and employees will take part in a 6:00 a.m. Fun Walk and Hataw starting from the Rodelsa Circle to Kiosko Kagawasan in Divisoria as part of the World Health Day celebration on April 9. (City Information Office)
