FRANCIS CASEY ALCANTARA began his campaign in the 21st Mitsubishi Lancer International Junior Championships on a high note by defeating Ariez Elyaas Deen Heshaam of Malaysia, 6-4, 6-0, on Wednesday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
Alcantara from Cagayan de Oro City, seeking his first singles crown in the event in his final year as a junior, dominated Heshaam in the second set to reach the next round.
“I’m going all-out for this one because this will be my last chance to win here at home,” said Alcantara in Pilipino.
Alcantara will face 13th seed Chuhan Wang of China, who beat Campbell Johnson of the United States, 6-3, 6-0.
“He is tall and has a great serve so let’s see what happens,” Alcantara said.
The 18-year-old Alcantara is the lone Filipino in the boys’ class after Jeson Patrombon lost to James Duckworth of Australia, 1-6, 0-6, late Tuesday while Kim Saraza was also eliminated after he bowed to top-ranked Mate Zsiga of Hungary, 0-6, 1-6, on Wednesday.
