Aboitiz Power Corp. is reportedly considering the construction of a new baseload coal-fired plant to expand its generation portfolio and help stabilize the power situation in Mindanao.
An option is to expand the 232-megawatt Mindanao coal plant of STEAG State Power, Inc. at PHIVIDEC Industrial Estate in Misamis Oriental, which is 34% owned by Aboitiz Power.

If this materializes, it would still take at least 36 months or 3 years before it can start operations. STEAG’s expansion was originally mulled for the Hanjin Shipyard project which is rumored to return in the 3rd quarter of this year.
