THIS early, Misamis Oriental has expressed interest in hosting the Palarong Pambansa in 2011.
In an interview, Gov. Oscar Moreno said Palarong Pambansa 2011 will be hosted by a province in Mindanao.
With that, Moreno is confident that Pelaez Sports Center in Cagayan de Oro, which has recently undergone a facelift, has excellent sports facilities to host the national sports event.
The last time the Palarong Pambansa was held in the city was in 1988. Although Pelaez Sports Center is located in Cagayan de Oro, it is owned by the provincial government of Misamis Oriental.
Pelaez Sports Center was installed with an Olympic-size rubberized track oval in 2008 and its boxing gym and swimming pool were renovated to comply with international standards.
Palarong Pambansa in 2010 will be hosted by a province in Luzon, and provinces which have signified interest in the bidding process at this point are the cities of Tarlac, Baguio and Puerto Princesa.
Moreno said the Department of Education will supervise the bidding process among contesting local government units.
There is only one other province which is expected to challenge the bid of Misamis Oriental, and this is Lanao del Norte, which boasts of the 18-hectare sprawling Mindanao Civic Center, host of Palarong Pambansa 2003.
Foremost requirement is the ability of the host to house close to 10,000 guests and participants from 17 regions, aside from standard facilities especially in athletics and swimming competition.
