CITY hall is pushing to expand the coverage of Mayor Constantino Jaraula’s pet ‘‘Golden Mile’’ project to Macabalan.
If plans don’t miscarry, many families living near the Cagayan River would find themselves displaced by the multimillion-peso project that is seen to give urban Cagayan de Oro a major facelift.
Jaraula, in a letter to the city council, sought a resolution that would stretch the project from the river bank of St. Augustine Cathedral going downstream to Barangay Macabalan.
Councilor Roger Abaday called Jaraula’s proposal ‘‘absurd’’. He claimed many of those who would be displaced are beneficiaries of the so-called ‘‘piso-piso’’ land distribution program of city hall.
Abaday said among the areas that would be adversely affected are Isla Cupa, Isla Delta, Isla Bugnaw and Isla de Oro.
He said families living in Barangays 13, 15 and 17, Consolacion, Puntod, Macabalan, Carmen, Kauswagan and Bonbon are also threatened by the planned project expansion.
But Councilor Ramon Tabor said Jaraula was on the right track, saying the project would provide Cagayan de Oro a boulevard near the river.
Councilor Simeon Licayan said the ‘‘Golden Mile’’ project was long overdue. He said the project would clean the river and its banks.
