The Burger King Whoppers blew an early 18-point lead but clutch shooting by Mark Yee and Ronjay Buenafe rescued the Whoppers to a pulsating 91-89 win over hard-luck Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in the 2009-2010 KFC PBA Philippine Cup in the Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental stop of the Phoenix Fuel PBA on tour.
An 11-0 run capped by back-to-back three-pointers by Yee and Buenafe brought Burger king from a 78-87 deficit to an 89-87 lead. Richard Yee and Ryan Arana then split their respective charities to draw the game level at 89-all with just 8.6 seconds left. Buenafe then drove to the basket and rolled in a layup plus a foul to give his team a 91-89 lead. Buenafe missed the free and time expired in the ensuing rebound battle, giving the Whoppers the win.
Buenafe finished with 22 points and 4 rebounds while Mark Yee added 14 and 7. Richard Yee (13 points, 10 rebounds) and Beau Belga (10 points, 10 rebounds) had double-doubles for the whoppers, which improved its record to an even 2-2.
Ryan Arana scored a career-high 25 points for the Elasto Painters, which remained winless in three starts. Jay-R Reyes added 15 points and 14 rebounds, Jeffrei Chan had 14 points and Gabe Norwood contributed 13 points, 6 assists and 5 boards.
