NORTHERN Mindanao has 116,556 new registrants, as of July 20, 2009, said Renato A. Magbutay, regional director of Commission on Elections (Comelec) in the region.

However, the Election Registration Board (ERB) which is tasked to approve or disapprove the application and cancellation of voter’s registration has deactivated 33,260 other registrants due to the voter’s death, failure to vote in the last two elections or transfer to and from other areas outside and inside the region.

Thus, from 2,084,469, the reported number of voters after the ERB hearings last April 20, there are now a total of 2,167,765 registered voters in the region, Magbutay said.

The list will now include those who turned 18 years of age after the May 14, 2007 elections, those who voted in the last two elections and those whose application for cancellation and transfer to and from other regions have been approved by the ERB hearings last July 20.

Meanwhile, the Comelec data show that among the region’s five provinces, Misamis Oriental has the highest number of registered voters with 695,420, followed by Bukidnon, 658,627, Lanao del Norte, 461,493, Misamis Occidental, 298,846, and Camiguin, 53,379 voters.

The most number of new registrants is also recorded in Misamis Orriental with 38,029, followed by Bukidnon, 37,885, Lanao del Norte, 20,350, Misamis Occidental, 16,807 and Camiguin, 3,485 registrants.

Magbutay also said the region has 13,857 established and 4,327 clustered precincts in its 2,022 barangays from 93 municipalities and cities.

The most number of established precincts is still in Misamis Orriental with 4,722 followed by Bukidnon, 4,336, Lanao del Norte, 3,243, Misamis Occidental, 2,091, and lowest in Camiguin, 365 precincts.

The next hearings for approval and disapproval of application and cancellation of voter registrations by the ERB have been scheduled on October 19, 2009 and January 4, 2010, Magbutay added. (Sun.Star/PIA-X)
