The Press Freedom Monument at the southwestern point of Vicente de Lara park was finally unveiled last Friday, August 21, 2009. The Ed Castrillo masterpiece is his first project in Mindanao and according to him, will be very significant because his eldest son resides in Cagayan de Oro City.
The monument has three figures, a fallen woman, who, according to Castrillo, represents the woman journalist Marlene Esperat of The Midland Review of Tacurong City, who was slain in front of her children on March 24, 2005. She is carried by a broadcast media man with a microphone while standing behind them is a print journalist with a camera around his neck.
Behind the main figures is a wall with 104 plates bearing the names of the slain members of media since 1986.
Next for Castrillo will be the Heritage Monument to replace the obelisk at the center of the park.
