Team Pilipinas fought a gallant stand against the much taller Jordanian squad before falling 70-81 in their quarterfinal match in the FIBA Asia Men’s Basketball Championship in Tianjin, China.
The Jordanians coached by long time mentor Mario Palma, outmuscled the smaller Filipinos under the boards getting 17 offensive rebounds. But the never say die Philippine squad started the final period with an 11-1 run capped by back-to-back triples by Gabe Norwood to cut the deficit to 5, 68-63 time down to 6 minutes left forcing Jordan to call a timeout.
Jordan was heavily favored before the game owing to its 90-59 demolition of the same RP squad in the Jones Cup this year. A tight first quarter saw Jordan leading 22-17 after 10 minutes. Back-to-back triples by Mick Pennisi gave RP its first lead 23-22. But Jordan leaned on Rasheim Wright to take the upperhand 45-33 at the half.
Repeated rallies by the Philippines occured in the 3rd canto but Jordan capitalized on their offensive rebounds and a last second 3 by Wesam Al-Sous gave Jordan a 67-52 bubble at the 3rd quarter buzzer.
With the loss, the Philippines will try to salvage pride by gunning for 5th place.
